Harriet Ivison, who lives in Mill Lane, underwent chemotherapy and had a bone marrow transplant in January 2018 – and learned to fold origami during this time.

The 26-year-old has raised £1,177 for CLIC Sargent, which provided day-to-day emotional, financial and practical support for Harriet and her family, with her origami challenge.

Harriet, an early years practitioner at Bedales Pre-prep, Dunannie in Petersfield, said: “I wanted to raise money for CLIC Sargent as they were so important to me during my transplant and beyond.

“Not only did they help me financially, they allowed my parents to stay in free accommodation near the hospital, they gave me a platform to kick start my career and they linked me up to other young people with cancer who remain incredibly important to me to this day.

Cancer turns families’ lives upside down and CLIC Sargent are there to provide incredible support to families.

“It feels great to be doing my bit to help this amazing charity reach those families.”

Rose Bailey, fundraising engagement manager for Sussex, said: “Due to the impact of coronavirus, CLIC Sargent is seeing a 60 per cent fall in income, while the number of families in need of support have increased rapidly.

“We rely entirely on donations to fund our vital work so we can’t thank Harriet enough for her fantastic efforts and for helping to ensure even more young people thrive not just survive after their cancer diagnosis.”

Last year CLIC Sargent supported 116 West Sussex families and gave out 65 grants worth £12,415 to help families to cope with the high costs of cancer.

The Cancer Costs report from the charity found that families with a child on active treatment spend an extra £600 a month.
