Eastbourne’s Britain’s Got Talent finalist creates ‘catchy’ social distancing song

Ventriloquist Steve Hewlett, who made it to BGT’s 2013 final, has produced the song Two Metre Peter with his wife Nina and music producer friend, which also features vocals from Steve’s puppet called Arthur Lager.

The song was released at the start of June and can be found on iTunes, YouTube, Amazon, and it has also been played on local radio stations such as BBC Radio Sussex.

Steve said, “It’s a catchy song. It’s quite funny. It’s all in there, I think. It’s Keith Harris and Orville-inspired.

“We wrote this song because it reminds people to keep distancing with other people. My friend wrote the music and I wrote the lyrics in about 30 minutes.

“My wife started singing the lyrics and it sounded great so we split the song between Arthur and Nina.”

The ventriloquist of 25 years said he, his wife and two daughters filmed the video in his garden in Willingdon and that the song is ‘quite a memory’ for the family.

He said, “I’m passionate about this song as it represents me and my family in lockdown, it will remind us of what time we shared together and I would love for it to be heard further than our garden.

“The feedback has been amazing, people have been saying ‘we love the song’. Hopefully it will spread organically and maybe make the charts.”

When choosing which charity to donate to, Steve said he wanted to help a ‘worthy’ cause and chose the NSPCC as they have needed an increasing amount of support since lockdown began.

The father-of-two went on to say thank you to those who have already supported the song so far.

He said, “I want to say thank you. However big the song gets, it’s fantastic for the charity to get support.”
