Party was a ‘good old fashioned knees-up’

Residents of Ladydell Road, in Worthing, turned out for games, food and music, echoing similar parties held for the royal wedding and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in recent years.

But Saturday’s event was held for no other reason than having a good time and organiser James Watts, 23, said it was well received.

He said: “We wanted to be the street which showed the others how it should be done.

“It was a great example of community networking and it was a good old fashioned knees-up.”

Under the guise of ‘Neighbours Aloud’, residents started preparing for the day months in advance.

A raffle, including prizes donated by local businesses and residents, a talent show and teddy throwing game was the pick of the activities on offer.

Nearby care home residents were invited to the event, with their own special tented area set up to accommodate them.

Although the day was free, donations were accepted for children’s charity Worthing Kids and Dapper Snapper.

Ladydell Road resident Finola Brophy, 61, said: “Ladydell Road and the surrounding area has some really lovely people and they were also really generous.

“Everyone from neighbours to Waitrose donated prizes for the raffle.”
