Schools have nothing to fear

Yet more scare-mongering about the consequences of leaving the EU, this time from language schools, who claim that '˜the removal of free movement would restrict students coming to town to learn English'.

However, there wouldn’t be any removal of free movement - before we were in the EU, Western Europeans who came to Britain as tourists or to study English did not need a visa. East Europeans did, but only because in those days Eastern European countries were all communist, controlled by the Soviet Union, and their citizens needed permission from their own country to leave, not just to enter a Western European country.

I was an EFL teacher in the days before the EU and having to show your passport did not deter anyone from coming.

The only difference if we leave the EU will be that visitors to this country will not be able to live here permanently or work without a work permit, issues that do not affect language school students. As for quoting German students who say that they need English to get a good job because it’s the common language in Europe - English is the main international language of the whole world as well as Europe, and it would still be the common language used in Europe whether we remain in the EU or not. They will still need to learn English. Language schools have nothing to fear from Brexit.
