Salsa flashmob in Horsham

Shoppers in Horsham Town Centre were shocked on Saturday when music started playing loudly and out of nowhere, 20 dancers appeared and performed a Rueda de Casino style salsa dance.

Rueda as it is known is a style that originated in Cuba and is danced in pairs in a circle, with a caller shouting out the names of the moves to dance.

The effect is a group of seemingly random dancers all in synch. Jon Riley who runs Horsham Salsa said it is a cross between Latin Street dancing and a Kayleigh – it’s most fun when it goes a bit wrong. The style, although it originates in Cuba is extremely popular worldwide as it allows large groups to dance together.

Salsa dancers from Horsham & Crawley performed three Flashmobs around Horsham on 28th March. The first in Market Square, the second on the Forum and the third on the Causeway outside the Olive Branch.

They were taking part in a world record attempt for the largest number of Flashmobs to take place at the same time on the same day. Clubs throughout the world were invited to perform a flashmob at 4:00pm on the same day. Over 200 clubs have taken part in 60 countries spanning the globe. Last year’s event led to the club being invited to Flashmob at Gatwick Airport as part of the BBC Children In Need appeal with the club appearing on the TV program the following week.
