Live and let live

THIS is in response to the very courageous Mr "Name and address supplied", who wrote to inform us about the shenanigans on West Beach (Gazette letters, June 17).

If you and your wife stopped walking over the dunes several years ago, what is your proof that anything is still going on there?

Or is it just prurient speculation?

Had you walked there recently, as I do regularly, you would know that the beach is also used by straight couples for nude sunbathing, and that therefore it is not just the homosexual issue you imagine it to be.

Advertising it as "the world's only gay nudist beach" might bring the pink pound to Littlehampton and help the local economy no end.

Sadly, advertising it as such would not be true, as there are many other gay beaches, not only in the world but also in the UK.

The area used for nude sunbathing by these men who, if we are to believe you, are all at it like rabbits, is nowhere near the visitor centre.

Moreover, in describing the visitor centre as "ideal for families and youth groups", you seem to be trying to link gay men with paedophilia.

I am sure you can't possibly have intended that.

By suggesting putting up hazard warning signs, are you really saying that you would be happy to see the area invaded by gangs of gay-bashers? Because that is precisely what will happen, and far greater damage will be done to the environment – not to mention to the victims of this hate-crime.

I am sure that from the tone of your letter no one could possibly think of you as homophobic – almost as sure as I am that you number many Jewish and black people among your closest friends.

Whatever you may think, the vast majority of people going to West Beach are there to enjoy the sun and the tranquillity, and are environmentally and socially responsible people who are doing no harm to anyone.

It is sad to think that there are still bigots in the world who are not prepared to live and let live.
