Horsham Lifesavers recognised for hard work with prestigious trophy

The Horsham Life Saving Club has been awarded the prestigious ‘Clive Holland Trophy’ having been selected by the Royal Life Saving Society as the’ Lifesaving Club of the Year’ and on Saturday October 4, members went to London Guildhall to receive their cup at the Annual National Honours Awards Ceremony.

The citation for the club read:- ‘’Awarded to an RLSS UK affiliated club who has done the most to carry out the objectives of the Society in their local area’.

David Slade (Chairman) Robin Akers (Treasurer) James Cossons (Youth Committee member) and Megan Holms (Award Recipient) represented the members of the club and the cup was presented by Clive Holland the Deputy Commonwealth Chairman of the RLSS.

In addition other individual members were in the Guildhall to receive national recognition for all the work they have done for the club and drowning prevention in general in the last year. The Guest of Honour presenting these awards was former World Champion Swimmer & Olympian Mark Foster who gave a stirring motivational address before the presentations and being photographed with every recipient.

Those receiving individual honours from Horsham LSC this year were Kate Hall (Bar to Service Medal); Certificates of Thanks:- Megan Holms and Freddie Mae Hayes-Coles (Absent at University); Certificates of Merit:- Emma Hatton, Bryan Lopez and Alex Mays (Absent at University). John Stainer the Horsham LSC’s Honorary Life Member was also present in an official capacity as SE Region Chairman.

This event was the icing on the cake for the club who have recently completed their summer open water training and exam programme.

In the course of this members successfully passed 32 ‘Stillwater’ exams in Southwater Lake and a further 16 ‘Beach’ exams at Lancing Beach. As a result of these successes Megan Holms, Emily Heather, Sam Watts and Abbie Sandle completed the requisite 12 exams to qualify for the RLSS Distinction Award.

They are now well back into their pool based activities at The Pavilions and they are hoping to build upon the additional 104 2014 exam passes before the enforced closure of the pool in December.

They have some new 14 members making up 2 new classes which started in September and these are already making steady progress.

Names are now being taken for the next new class which is scheduled for the beginning of February.
