Giving helped Haitians survive

I WAS pleased to be able to thank local residents earlier this year, through your paper, for kindly supporting our appeal to help the citizens of Haiti after their terrible ordeal; and the Rotary Club of Littlehampton immediately used some of the money collected to provide Shelter Boxes and Water Survival Boxes.

The initial relief effort by Rotary International resulted in Shelter Boxes being supplied to provide temporary accommodation, food and clean water for some 120,000 Haitians in tented villages throughout the island; and in total, 100 plane-loads of clothing, medical equipment and supplies were delivered in the first month after the disaster.

Rotary also delivered some 30 tons of clothes, blankets, folding beds and other household items by barge as the airports were under pressure.

In total, Rotary International now has some 33 projects underway which are providing clean water, sanitation and medical care and restoring education facilities.

Rotarian Claude Surena has been appointed by the Haitian government to be head of the Haiti Task Force and he has now requested Rotary International to provide three clinics to assist with the 4,500 amputees who lost limbs.

Rotary has taken on the task of making the prosthetic limbs and for the fitting and training of the amputees in using their new limb correctly.

Rotary estimates that each of the three clinics will cost around US $50,000 to set up, so last week I was pleased to send a further Rotary Club of Littlehampton cheque for 1,100 to help with the financing of the clinics.

The money was the balance of amount we collected earlier this year, 1,000, and the 100 raised by the 7th Littlehampton Air Scouts Beaver Patrol.

This sum will now be put to good use, helping the people who were so unfortunate as to lose limbs.

So may I once again thank local residents and the Beaver Patrol for supporting their local Rotary Club, which has enabled the club to help those in great need in Haiti.
