Costly recruitment

SO, it cost £31,000 to recruit a new chief executive for Arun District Council (Gazette, June 23)?

How is this possible?

Can I suggest a cheaper method?

Use your secretary to draft a job advertisement, and place it on the Arun District Council website; this will be picked up by numerous job sites, at no cost.

Use your secretary to correlate and categorise the hundreds of responses you will receive.

Spend an hour or two maximum in drawing up a short-list, then arrange interviews.

Arrange second interviews.

Cost?

There will probably be no external costs incurred.

Why in this market do we need to pay £5,000 more in salary, and with so much quality out there looking for work, why do we need to pay £95,000 a year?

I can’t help think Arun is in a time warp.

Many leading companies no longer advertise jobs, using, in many cases, social networking sites to search out candidates.

When times are tough, you have to continually look at different ways of doing things.
