‘Congratulations’

COUNCILLOR Ricky Bower is to be congratulate for raising the issue of whether the massive developments in the vicinity of the A259 restrict its capacity as a major traffic route and, therefore, justifies a new bypass.

It should be emphasised, however, that before Arun District Council rules on planning applications affecting the A259, they are first examined by the county highways department which, we must assume, gives careful consideration as to whether approval would impair its traffic efficiency. The clearance of the various projects detailed by Mr Bower shows that they do not share the general public concern.

The massive highway works at Toddington, about two years ago, appear to indicate that the county council considers that the A259 can function both as a major traffic artery and also as a local distributor road; otherwise, these works would need to be regarded as a major waste of public money.

May I suggest to Mr Bower that he should request the county council to clarify its policies?
