LETTER: Skeleton service

I recently had the misfortune to have had to travel by Southern trains from Lewes to London.

I let a couple of trains go as they were packed. But of course, that’s Southern for you. Not enough carriages on trains that they know will be busy.

But what was more disconcerting was that I noticed that station staff apparently no longer assist the guard or driver in signalling when the doors are clear to close. It begins to look as though the Southern plan is to run a skeleton service in terms of staffing. Stations will be devoid of staff, ticket offices shut down and safety or risk management a secondary concern. No doubt the shareholders will love it. But there is disaster waiting happen on this network.
