Join the army of new volunteers this week

The call comes as the 30th national Volunteer Week was launched on Monday (June 2).

The initiative focuses on the good work that volunteers and do-gooders do for organisations up and down the county.

It is also used as a great tool to inspire others to give their time.

This week’s column features a number of opportunities to help the area’s schools.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is looking for a schools co-ordinator to promote the benefits of regular exercise to pupils.

The role would see co-ordinators trying to persuade schools to participate in the Jump Rope for Heart skipping event.

They would also be responsible for promoting junior golf, seasonal activities and BHF education resources.

Volunteers may also be called to attend assemblies and motivate the pupils prior to events.

Other opportunities available this week include:

n St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School, in Highdown Drive, Littlehampton, is hunting for a green-fingered individual to become the school’s new garden maintenance volunteer.

The role would involve keeping the primary school’s gardens and grounds flourishing.

n The Look & Sea Centre, in Surrey Street, Littlehampton, is looking for a new events assistant to volunteer at the site.

The volunteer would assist the education officer with putting on and publicising events for all ages as well as art and craft workshops and story-telling sessions.

n Littlehampton’s branch of the Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is appealing for new face to welcome clients.

The volunteer would be known as a gateway assessor.

They would be responsible for initial interviews at the advice centre, in Anchor Springs.

There is training for one-and-a-half days per week for about six weeks to become an assessor.

When the volunteer has completed the training, they will be able to start interviewing and assessing clients.

Full support from a supervisor will be provided throughout. Once trained, the applicant is expected to commit to at least one day per week.

Candidates should be team-players, friendly, sensitive and patient.
