Challenging Northbrook academia

WHILST cycling past Northbrook College last week I saw an advertisement claiming a "University standard education" and alongside it the pithy slogan "STAY LOCAL SAVE MONEY".

I would like to point out that this simply reflects the poor standard of Academia in this country today:

"STAY" is a verb, ie a doing word, and thus requires an adverb such as "LOCALLY" and thus if we use correct English grammar we arrive at the pithy slogan "STAY LOCALLY SAVE MONEY", which might be possible (I don't know if the Sussex Yeoman opposite rents rooms?) although what this phrase has to do with any standard of education is beyond me.

An academically correct sentence would be "STUDYING LOCALLY CAN SAVE MONEY", although given the union bar and a pub opposite I doubt it amongst today's students.

When I went to university in 1973 seven per cent of the population achieved this standard, now the figure is around 35 per cent.

Are today's students so much brighter than we were?

I passed 10 GCE O levels at one sitting in 1971, and five GCE A levels in 1973 (joint maths, pure maths, applied maths, physics and chemistry).

The school was Worthing High School For Boys, Bolsover Road, one of the best grammar schools in the area, where I also won the Old Azurian's prize for A level physics.

At the age of 52 and in failing health I offer a challenge:-

I am prepared to sit (anonymously) a degree examination at Northbrook College on any subject you choose from electronics and computing to tourism and mMedicine, and we'll see how I do?

I do not require any tuition, beer or drugs first.

Please accept the challenge Northbrook academia.
