What a wonderful weekend! Northiam truly was in Festival mode last weekend, and the sun joined in too! Thank you to everyone who came to the Playing Fields and enjoyed Northiam Bonfire Society’s day of fun, food, competition and some mellow music just right for relaxing with a pint. I’m not even going to start the list of thank-you’s but I feel a special mention should go to Indigo Blues Band with Andy and Mick, who set the tone for the whole day and were followed by some amazing Open Mic musicians. We have their names, and we want them back!

And what can I say about Sunday? A world famous comedian performing for 500 of us in Northiam! Milton Jones was the nicest celebrity I have ever met, joining fans at the bar, chatting and posing for photos with anyone who asked, and then keeping us laughing for an hour. With the puns flowing thick and fast, it was interesting to hear the laughter setting off in waves, as people worked out the jokes!

Again, thanks to everyone involved in any way – the Victoria Howarth Quintet, the Wall of Sound choir, and everyone who came prepared to have a good time – and we did!

Milton Jones gave his time in aid of the church restoration fund, and lo and behold, first thing on Monday morning, the builders rolled up to start work. Again, many, many thanks to so many people in the village (and beyond) who have given so generously so that this work can be done. Once it’s watertight and smartened up again, we can start making it a useful building for us all.

I hope the enthusiasm for joining in things continues this weekend, with Northiam Horticultural Society‘s Summer Social Event this evening (Friday) in the Village Hall. Anyone wishing to take part should take their exhibits to the hall between 7 and 7.30 pm.

Bikini vases will be provided (and must be used).

Classes are: “Your favourite flower” up to 3 cut stems of the same type e.g. roses.

“Interesting foliage” up to 3 stems of the same type or different.

Your favourite “Flower photograph” should not exceed 8” x 6” and be mounted on card.

After the exhibits have been set up, wine and nibbles will be on offer, with a quiz and plant identification competition, which ends at 8.30pm, after which there will be an informal question and answer session. After the prizegiving and drawing of the raffle, the evening will end about 9.30pm.

It sounds a really good evening, so why not make your way to the Village Hall and meet some friendly plant lovers! New faces will be very welcome (as will the familiar!!)

Friday is also the day for the monthly Village Hall Coffee Morning Market from 9.30-11.30am.

Northiam Footpath Group head to Sedlescombe for a 4½ miles walk Passing Powdermill Reservoir. Meet in the surgery car park at 1.30pm on Sunday.

Coffee Stop offers a friendly chat over the cup that cheers every Wednesday in the Church Centre 10-12 – all very welcome.

The next Bonfire event is the Open gardens, which will be held on Sunday 20th July. Six private gardens within a gentle walk of the village (surgery) car park will be opening between 11am and 5pm. It’s always a treat to see what other gardeners have done, and perhaps be inspired to try something new. Whatever, it will be a most enjoyable day, with the option of teas in the garden behind the Church Centre. Let’s hope for another scorcher!
