New speed camera installed

A new speed camera has been installed on the A26 in Crowborough by the Sussex Safety Camera Partnership (SSCP).

There were 15 injury crashes, including six that resulted in someone being killed or seriously injured, on a 1km stretch of Eridge Road at the camera site during a three year period.

A speed survey carried out before the camera was approved showed 38% of vehicles each day (about 4,000) were travelling above the 40mph speed limit.

Emma Rogers, SSCP Communications Manager, said: 'We are confident this camera will have the desired effect of reducing serious injury collisions and vehicle speeds on this busy road.

'The camera is bright yellow and there are several warning signs beforehand, as well as its presence highlighted on our website, www.sussexsafetycameras.gov.uk.

'A person is killed on the roads of Sussex every three and a half days, and despite the high profile campaigns, speed continues to play a part in that.

'Drivers must learn to travel at appropriate speeds '“ if they ignore all the camera warning signs, enforcement is the only answer.

'The onus is on every individual driver to lift their right foot.'
