New Rye councillor chosen in by-election

The newest member of Rye Town Council was chosen as residents went to the polls in the by-election on Thursday (July 28).

Independent candidate Sam Barnes was elected to replace the late John Izod with 161 votes.

Gerard Reilly (Lab) came second with 111 votes, followed by Marie-Anne Breeds (Independent) with 103 votes and Matt Follett (Independent for Rye) came last with 98 votes.

Turnout was low as 13.24 per cent of those on the electoral roll voted, of which there are 3566 registered voters.
