New moves to beat congestion

Car-only underpasses and lightweight flyovers are to be considered for the A27 Chichester bypass as part of a far-reaching study of Chichester's horrendous traffic congestion.

The move was announced at a meeting of West Sussex County Council, in the wake of a government decision to reject plans for multi-million pound improvements to the road.

Park and ride, priority bus lanes, travel plans for businesses and schools, and protection of roads used as short cuts, to avoid congestion, will also be looked at.

First recommendations are expected next spring, after which there will be wide public consultation on proposals which come forward.
