new hospital idea

A NEW community hospital could be built in Littlehampton or Rustington to radically modernise community health services in Arun.

That's just one possibility being discussed by the Community Hospitals' Project Review Group to improve the health service available to patients locally.

Alternatives which will be put to Adur, Arun and Worthing Primary Care Trust (PCT) at a meeting today (Thursday) include developing Zachary Merton Hospital, developing Littlehampton Hospital and "exploring opportunities for building at other sites in the Arun area".

Members will also discuss the possibility of providing a combination of hospital beds with an improved community service, offering more intensive nursing, therapy and social care support in a patient's own home.

This, the review group believes, gives people greater choice and independence.

Brian Hughes, director of Adur, Arun and Worthing PCT, said there were a lot of possibilities to explore. "It isn't just about creating more beds," he said

"It's about a total package of health care."

Community representatives have been involved in the planning process and a monthly forum, news bulletin and meetings with councillors, including members of Littlehampton Town Council, have provided an opportunity for regular communication.

All the options will undergo a thorough assessment to ensure the final proposal which will not be decided until October or November offers maximum benefits to the community and is best value for money.

Work is also underway to raise the standards of the patients' environment at both Zachary Merton and Littlehampton hospitals.

This will take into account modern health requirements, sustaining the service until the new developments are in place.
