New breed of magistrate sought for Worthing

THE search is on for a new breed of magistrate in Worthing.

An open day on May 15 has been organised to help attract younger people to the bench.

The court is looking for people in their late 20s and early 30s, but the evening, organised by West Sussex County Council, is open to anyone who wants to know more about the job.

Worthing magistrate Sarah Hammett, who is deputy chairman of the bench, said: "People always think they are going to be older people but there is no stereotypical magistrate.

"Quite a lot of people think they might not be the right kind of person but we want to represent all members of the public."

Employers are required to give a minimum of 26 half days leave for magistrates but Sarah says they also benefit from the training their staff will receive.

She added: "You don't have to be brilliantly clever but common sense and an ability to make up your mind quickly is useful.

"Often people in their late 20s have children but the time can be flexible and you can come along to see if you want to apply in two or three years' time."

"It's an opportunity to see what's involved in the job."

The minimum age for applicants is 18 and no formal or academic qualifications are required.

Any questions will be answered on the evening, which runs at Worthing Magistrates' Court on May 15 from 6pm to 8pm. Refreshments will be provided.
