MAN DIES TRYING TO HELP GIRLFRIEND

A 37-year old man died at the weekend after slipping off rocks west of Selsey Bill while trying to help his girlfriend.

SOLENT Coastguards received two 999 calls from members of the public which said there was a woman in the water to the west of Selsey Bill, who was in trouble.

Coastguard rescue officers were sent to the scene immediately, as well as scrambling the coastguard rescue helicopter Victor Alpha from Lee-on-Solent. The Selsey inshore RLNI lifeboat was also asked to launch.

The man was located by lifeboat crew and taken to the lifeboat station from where he ws airlifted to the Queen Alexander Hospital in Cosham, but was pronounced dead there.
