Innovative ideas at town trade fair

Entrepreneurs of the future took centre stage at Priory Meadow last weekend to take part in the Young Enterprise Hastings and Rother Trade Fair.

The event, held last Saturday (March 5), gave young people the opportunity to present their innovative ideas to shoppers visiting the centre along with the chance to purchase unique gifts.

Young Enterprise is a charity that works with 3,482 schools in the UK delivering 2.5 million learning hours each year empowering young people to learn, work and live by providing them with the knowledge to deal with 8 key skills: communication, confidence, financial capability, initiative, organisation, problem solving, team work and resilience by way of setting up a company, creating, producing, marketing and finally selling a product to the general public.

Brett McLean, 1066 Country FSB Chairman and Ambassador for Locate East Sussex, judged the youngsters’ trade stands supported by 1066 FSB Secretary Kerry Byott.

The winning stands were ‘Grass Shoots Ltd’ Highworth Grammar School, Ashford and ‘South Style’ formed by the Saxon Mount and Torfield Academy, St Leonards.

St Leonards Academy’s ‘Birds Retreat’ and Ratton School, Eastbourne’s ‘Initium’ received ‘Highly Commended’ awards for their trade stands.

Brett says it is extremely refreshing to meet innovative and entrepreneurial students with an interest in business. “These students could be tomorrow’s employers and real life entrepreneurs,” he said.
