GREETINGS: What a busy week it has been. Were you able to visit the Craft Fair? Lovely things there. And sometimes the sun shone and sometimes it didn't. Plenty of colour in the gardens, and my roses are doing particularly well at the moment. Does anyone know where the starlings go during the day? Probably they are out in the fields scavenging there.

CHURCH NEWS: The 9.30 am service for the eighth Sunday after Trinity will be Parish Eucharist, led by Rev. Canon Robin Whitehead. The day is the birthday of The Duchess of Cornwall who was born in 1947. Monday 18th is designated as Nelson Mandela Day. This is promoted by the United Nations, begun in 2009 to promote peace and reconciliation on a local, national and international level. We certainly need some of that at the moment. Wednesday 20 is commemorating Margaret of Antioch, martyred in 304. She is not to be confused with Margaret of England or Margaret of Scotland. Some 20 churches in England and Wales are dedicated to her, notably St. Margaret’s Westminster. Friday 22nd is Mary Magdalene’s Day.

CHURCH MARKET: The Church Market is TOMORROW, 16th July in the Memorial Hall from 11 am to 2 pm. The plant season is over but it is hoped that there will be some new season’s produce. If you have any which you can spare it would be very much appreciated. We all know that fresh from the garden always tastes the best. The ladies in the kitchen will be busy with lunches and the popular Chilli con Carne will be on the menu. The best time for lunch is between 12 noon and 12.30 pm to be sure of getting a full choice of menu. The cake stall is expecting to have Eccles cakes (Hurray!) as well as many others, plus jam and the very popular marmalade. So if you cannot make it for lunch, do try to call in for some cakes and stay for coffee and a chat. See you there.

WEATHER: The midsummer weather is giving a pretty fair imitation of November, maybe a few degrees warmer, but windy, grey and drizzly. Have we had our summer? There WERE four consecutive days of sunshine last week.

PUBLIC MEETING: There will be a meeting on Friday 22nd July in the Memorial Hall at 7 pm. Please come along to hear more about local needs housing, and take the opportunity to express your views. A representative from Action in Rural Sussex (AiRS) will present the options and answer any questions. This follows the survey held locally, which demonstrated a need for affordable housing in the Parish.

QUEEN’S HEAD: The live music on Sunday between 4 & 6 pm will be played by Borrowed Time, playing Rock and Roll music. This morning I saw a chap on a bike coming home at just after 10 am, obviously having been out a long way. This was Ian returning from a training ride, preparing for the Prudential Ride London to Surrey 100. He is raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Care. You can donate at the Queen’s Head or the Royal Oak in Pett. He will be out for real on 31st July. Don’t know how far he went today, but 100 miles is quite a long way !!

SCGHOOL NEWS: It has been a very busy week at school. The two Learning Ambassadors acquitted themselves very well when they visited the Houses of Parliament last week. They were able to see both Houses, the voting lobbies, Downing Street and Horse Guards Parade. They met our MP Amber Rudd, who talked to them about the Referendum and leadership issues. The Year 5 children had a super trip to Windmill Hill, the PGL holiday centre. The parents of the new Reception children visited the school, and the children had fun meeting their new classmates. Reports will be available on Monday 18th July. The Friends (PTA) AGM has been re-scheduled to Thursday 21st July at 4 pm at the Robin Hood Inn. There will be a light buffet and food will be available from 6 pm.

The Head Teacher’s Awards this week go to : Caterpillars, Charlie, for being kind and caring; Spiders, Taylor for setting a good example; Dragonflies, Billy, for a good attitude to learning; and Bees, Joshua, Isabella, Sophie, Jensen, and Amelie for being excellent hosts to the new parents.The Class awards go to Caterpillars, Summer Elton-Cleary and Hannah; Spiders, Lily and Lola; Dragonflies, Kyle and Mary; and Bees, Noah and Lily the learning Ambassadors.
