Heathfield switches on

THE first co-ordinated display of Christmas lights to be put up in Heathfield in ten years will be turned on today (Friday).

More than 90 per cent of traders on Heathfield High Street have contributed to a pot for lights in the town. Businesses raised around 7,000, which was matched by Heathfield and Waldron District Council.

For the past decade, the only lights put up in the town have been by individual traders. However, Heathfield Town Manager Yvonne Hutchinson said that, as a result of teamwork, the High Street will benefit from lights which give a uniform effect.

'There will be pure white lights along the High Street. We knew we couldn't compete with bigger towns such as Uckfield and Crowborough so we asked everybody to co-ordinate.'

The Christmas lights will be switched on at 5pm. This will be preceeded at 4.30pm with the official 'opening' of the new and improved High Street. Ramps, extra crossings, seating areas, hanging baskets and trees have been added to the High Street as part of the Heathfield Partnership's drive to regenerate the town.

County councillor for Heathfield, Rupert Simmons will conduct the opening, while children from Holy Cross School will sing Christmas carols.

Other attractions include appearances from the Heathfield Community College Soul Band, the Town Crier and, of course, Father Christmas, while a fun fair will provide entertainment for thrill seekers.
