Furnishing a brighter future in Littlehampton

RESTORE is the apt name for a new project opening in Littlehampton next week, which aims to help homeless people get their lives back on track and at the same time breathe new life into tired old furniture.

The venture, which is being supported by Littlehampton churches, will be known as Restore Arun, mirroring the furniture recycling scheme started up in Chichester by homeless charity Stonepillow.

It will start up on the Harwood Industrial Estate on Tuesday, with a day centre for rough sleepers, a community inclusion officer on hand to help them make positive changes in their lives, and training on offer in recycling donated furniture.

Stonepillow says the benefits of providing people with work experience and help looking for jobs include improved self-esteem, a reduction in anti-social behaviour and an increased chance of finding long term employment.

People on low incomes are also helped by the opportunity to buy good quality, recycled furniture, which adds to the scheme’s sustainability.

Furniture from the new base will be sold there and Stonepillow is appealing for donations of unwanted furniture, which can be taken to Harwood Road on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from 9am-5pm.

Customers are also welcome to visit and browse the stock between these times.
