Emerson Brito, who was on board Eastbourne Harbour-based workboat the Britannia, recorded two dolphins swimming together in the English Channel near Beachy Head on Monday (May 4).

The footage was sent into the volunteer-run Brighton Dolphin Project (BDP) which shared it on their Twitter account and said they believed the marine mammals were a ‘pod of white-beaked dolphins’.

Research and sightings coordinator at BDP Thea Taylor said, “We really appreciate Emerson and the crew of the Britannia sending in this footage.

“White-beaked dolphins are an offshore species and little is known about their distribution in the south east. It’s a rare sighting and great to share with the wider Sussex community.

“We rely on people to send in their marine mammal sightings to add to our research and raise awareness of the variety of species we have along our beautiful coastline.

“The fishing community are a massive part of this as they are out there every day and the information they provide is extremely useful, especially in these times of lockdown when people can’t be out as much as usual.

“We would urge anyone with sightings, pictures or videos to get in touch with the Brighton Dolphin Project so we can continue to share these amazing experiences.”
