Full moon tonight should see tens of thousands of birds setting wing for the far north. The brent geese in Bosham channel, for example, those who spend their winter close to the village, usually leave on March 26, so they may already have gone when the moon comes to its zenith.

But many times over the past 35 years I have stood outside in the garden at about 9pm during the March full moon and heard the geese go over this house on their way to the Thames estuary during the first stage of travel.

If the night is calm ( as it often is on full moon) and the sky clear, you can hear the brents half a mile away as they call to each other for both encouragement and contact.
