Farm Diary by Gwyn Jones, December 8

We are yarding the last few cows at Plaistow, and with calving finished, we can settle down to a simpler routine. Cows are milking very well, with very high fat and protein content in the milk, but the heifers are a couple of litres per head down. Not sure, why this is as we have grouped them with the smaller crossbred cows this winter, minimising competition.

Our heifers are always on the small side, partly due to the Jersey blood, but also due to us calving the majority of them in August.
