Electric Storm Youth latest

A CHARITY has been given the go-ahead to start creating a new youth facility in Lancing.

Electric Storm Youth has been granted permission by West Sussex County Council to build on the former Freshbrook School site, in Grinstead Lane, subject to planning approval.

The charity can now start applying for major grants and coming up with a design for the site.

Chair of directors Marion Peskett said: "It is great news that the county council has confirmed that it is supporting us.

"We have been waiting for this signal.

"It means we can get on with the major tasks of obtaining large grants, talking to architects, making plans and turning our vision into a reality.

"Obviously, there are lots of hurdles still to overcome and we have regular meetings planned with the council to discuss our progress."

Electric Storm Youth was set up in 2007 when Mrs Peskett attended a seminar at the New Wine Christian Conference.

A team, Legacy XS, had established a youth facility and skate park in Essex and this inspired Mrs Peskett to start something similar in Lancing.

Those involved in Electric Storm Youth are now hoping to create a facility open 12 hours a day, seven days a week, providing a safe and accessible place for young people to receive support and advice, as well as meet their friends and enjoy themselves.

In October, a group from the charity visited Legacy XS to meet the young people who benefit from the facility and get ideas for their own site.

Pat Arculus, West Sussex County Council member for children and young people's services, said: "Electric Storm Youth has come up with an exciting plan that will obviously benefit young people in the Adur area.

"I am pleased we are able to assist in terms of a site and wish them well with their applications for grants and fund-raising to make it a reality."
