Eco-town land 'is on green site'

LAND designated for an eco-town at Ford is a greenfield site currently in profitable arable use, Arun District Council chief executive Ian Sumnall has revealed.

He said the proposals went against the green and sustainable principles of eco-towns by developing mainly on prime greenfield land.

He has also raised concerns about the public and private sector investment being sucked out of Bognor and Littlehampton if an eco-town at Ford went ahead.

There were additional fears that the number of homes proposed could possibly be 10,000 not 5,000. Mr Sumnall said the 'serious' eco-town proposal, by the Ford Airfield Vision Group, covered around 350 hectares of land but the brownfield area mentioned in the Government's announcement was less than one seventh of that area.
