East Preston family hurt in fairground break down

THREE teenage siblings from East Preston were hurt by flying pieces of a broken fairground ride.

They were on The Meteorite, at the Lashmar Road, East Preston fair at about 8pm on Thursday (June 18), when glass light bulb covers on the machinery's decoration came loose, and shattered against the ride.

A 17-year-old girl was hit on the head and was treated by paramedics, a 14-year-old girl sustained a bruise to her right leg and a boy, 16, suffered a cut finger. All three are recovering at home.

The ride, which is independently run at the William Cole site, was closed immediately.

Sgt Peter Allan, of Littlehampton police, said that full details of the incident had been passed to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which had authorised The Meteorite to reopen yesterday (Friday).

"I am pleased to say that no one was seriously hurt as a result of this incident. Local officers from Littlehampton arrived quickly at the scene and established information from a variety of people," he said.

He added that the incident was in no way a reflection on the fair itself, as the piece that broke was "aesthetic rather than functional".
