Horsham police has urged drivers to be vigilant following a spate of incidents along the A272 corridor at Cowfold, Coolham and Billingshurst.

Scammers, posing as drivers in need, flag motorists down and attempt to con them into handing over money for petrol, in exchange for a gold-coloured ring, watch or bracelet, police said.

A spokesperson for Horsham police said: “We are urging people to be aware of this scam taking place on our local roads and to warn friends and family.

“These fraudsters are taking advantage of people’s goodwill in exchange for items of gold jewellery that are likely to be fake and often provide victims with bogus business cards. The money will not be used to buy fuel.”
