Rustington thief jailed following police sting

A RUSTINGTON man is among one of three men to be sentenced for theft and the handling of stolen goods following a police sting.

Gareth Jones, 40 of Roundstone Crescent, was sentenced on Monday (July 15) at Chichester Crown Court to a total of 16 months in prison after pleading guilty to seven counts of handling stolen goods and three counts of theft.

Jones, pictured, was charged with handling stolen goods by selling stolen items at car boot sales across Sussex from April 2011 to August 2012 and thefts between March 2012 and May 2012 from marine areas across Sussex and Hampshire.

Two other men, Simon Orrill, 33, of no fixed abode, and James Gascoigne, 29, of Hawthorne Close, Midhurst, were also jailed after being caught by police.

Orrill, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced at Worthing Magistrates’ Court, last month, receiving a 12-month community order 200 hours of unpaid work, while Gascoigne – who also pleaded guilty – was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and a £215 fine.

Inspector Will Rolls said: “The successful conviction of these three men sends out a strong message to the local community, if you take it, it could be ours and we will catch you and bring you to justice.”
