Computer screens hidden under pier

A 19-YEAR-OLD Goring man has been given his “final wake-up call” after admitting handling stolen goods.

Joseph Isted, of Ardingly Drive, Goring, was caught helping his friend carry computer monitors stolen from an office block in South Street, Worthing, in December.

On Thursday, Worthing magistrates warned the father-of-one was “very close to going inside”, describing his criminal record as “appalling”.

Magistrate Graham Toole-Mackson said he had hoped a previous incident, which left Isted with broken bones and having to undergo re-constructive facial surgery, would have helped him change his ways.

“We were pretty horrified at your record. But there does seem to be an indication, perhaps as a result of the accident you were injured in, that crime can lead to terrible consequences,” he warned.

“I hope this is the final wake-up call and you will make something of your life in the future.”

Isted was charged with handling stolen goods between December 13 and 15, 2009, after police caught him helping his friend transport the computer monitors which were hidden beneath wooden planks under Worthing Pier.

Adrian Butt, representing Isted, said: “He was only helping his friend to move one of those monitors. He does not necessarily think through his actions.

“He is kicking himself because he stayed out of trouble for quite a long time for him and he is moving on with his life.”

Isted was given a 12-month community order, a supervision requirement for 12 months, and told to attend the Think First programme. He was also ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work, and given a curfew for two months.
