Communities unite to remember the Great War

A whole host of commemorations will be taking place to mark one of the darkest chapters in human history.

In Arundel today (Sunday, August 3) members of the town’s museum and Royal British Legion branch are organising a special event.

The bells of St Nicolas’ Parish Church will be ringing out from 3.30pm to mark the ceremony, which will be taking place at the war memorial in High Street, from 4pm.

Primary school children from the town and family members of the 93 Arundel residents killed in the conflict will be laying poppy crosses to mark the deaths.

- Residents in Angmering will be uniting on Monday to pay tribute to villagers killed in the First World War.

A service, organised by Angmering’s Royal British Legion branch, will be taking place at the war memorial in The Square, from 10.30am.

A special exhibition will then be on display in the Village Hall marking the deaths of more than 40 villagers killed in the conflict.

- Littlehampton mayor Jill Long is joining in with the Royal British Legion’s Light’s Out initiative to commemorate the beginning of the First World War.

It is taking place at St Mary’s Church, in Church Street, Littlehampton on Monday from 10-11pm. All the public are invited along to mark the candlelit commemoration.

- Quakers across Littlehampton will be lighting candles from 10pm and are urging people to join them.

- Veterans will be joining an event blessing Rustington’s First World War memorial garden, in Ash Lane, from 11.15am on Monday.

- East Preston and Kingston Royal British Legion is holding a service at the East Preston war memorial, in The Street, from 11pm.
