MAJOR work involving a spider's web of scaffolding and a huge ramp is being carried out to stablise the cliff below Newhaven Fort.

The scheme is part of an overall restoration project designed to combat cliff top erosion and stop the nearby gun emplacement from tumbling down the side of the cliff.

A tunnel, which came out of the chalk face, has collapsed so part of the work will involve erecting a barrier and filling it with concrete.

The ramps have been constructed to allow access for equipment needed for the stabilisation.

The cost of the cliff work is 160,00 but the tunnel collapse has added a further 50,000 to the total. Money has come from the single regeneration budget, the Heritage Lottery Fund and a small amount from Lewes District Council. Work is due to finish at the end of the month.
