Easter: Holy Week and all the services at St Laurence Church were all well attended and supported by young and old alike, culminating in the triumphant family service on Easter Sunday morning. Father Michael regaled us with another story about Harold the church cat, who slept peacefully on the pulpit behind him as he spoke. He told how Harold had met St Laurence, dressed in white who had described to him what happened when the Easter Candle was to be dedicated later in the service. It caused great amusement to all when Harold, being a cat baulked at being sprinkled with holy water but was told by the saint to smile and enjoy it, or Father Michael would come back and get him again! The congregation renewed their baptismal vows in unison and at the end of the service the excited children couldn't wait to take part in the Easter Egg hunt in the churchyard. It is well worth a visit to our beautiful Church to see the Easter flowers, or wander through the cemetery to enjoy the primroses and other spring flowers.

WI: The 98th birthday meeting of the Catsfield WI will be held in the Village Hall on Thursday 7th April at the summertime start of 2.30pm. A birthday tea, complete with birthday cake will be prepared and served by the committee and the entertainment will be by Peter Willson talking about ‘The Great British Songbook’. Tickets will also be available for members to purchase for themselves and a guest to attend the ‘Celebration Lunch for the 90th Birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth II’ on Saturday June 11th. Price £8 each.

The Spring Show: The Catsfield Horticultural Society will be holding the Spring Show next Saturday 9th April in the Village Hall from 2pm – 4pm. Entrance will be 50p and children free. There will be a Raffle, Teas, Plant and Cake Stalls and of course the added interest of looking at all the lovely entries. The schedules are still available in the Village Store but the entries have to be submitted to a committee member by Wednesday 6th this week. Do please make the effort to enter the many and varied classes and do also encourage the children to join in, they love it! Also come to the hall on the day to show your support.

Jumble Sale: A reminder that the WI Jumble Sale will be held on Saturday 16th April from 10am – 12pm, entry 50p. All donations of jumble will be gratefully received at the Village Hall from 8.30am and contributions of cakes for the Cake stall too please. This is to raise money for the WI charity of The Air Ambulance Service, so do please come along, grab some bargains and help raise money for this worthy cause.

Annual Parish Assembly: This important meeting, which affects all Catsfield residents will be held in the Village Hall on Wednesday 13th April at 7.30pm. It is the opportunity to hear the report by the Parish Council on the past year in the village and plans for the future, as well as reports from the District and County Councils, the police and village groups and organisations. It is in your interest to attend.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting: This will be held in St Laurence Church at 7.30pm on Monday 18th April to discuss church matters and for the election of church officers.

‘On the Box!’: So much is going on in the village this month! There will be a special event on Thursday 28th April when Catsfield Village Hall is proud to present ‘Bowjangles’ with a show entitled ‘On the Box!’ This promises to be a fast moving, energetic comedy performance by a string quartet who dance, sing, leap, tumble and joke whilst playing all the music and not missing a beat! Tickets are on sale from the Village Stores price £10 and £7 for concessions.

Sport: What a day of sport we enjoyed last Saturday. The English cricket team had a tremendous fight to beat Sri Lanka in the T20, which inspired Catsfield to beat Icklesham Casuals 3 - 1 at home. This in turn, I hear from a well-known source, inspired England to beat Germany 3 - 2 that very night. Apparently, Catsfield played well, but then, dear readers, we are often told that. This time, despite having a squad of only 11 players and playing without our usual goalkeeper, we actually won. We don’t have a game tomorrow, but with only four more games to play, it will be better to finish the season without the rain and cold wind. (Thanks very much Ann, your reports are always interesting and your humour is greatly appreciated!)

Mobile Library: Next Friday 8th April, the East Sussex Mobile Library will be in its usual place outside the Village Hall from 11.55am – 12.30 pm.
