The society had no choice but to abandon plans for this year’s bonfire celebrations after it struggled to fill a number of key roles within the society, including a new chairperson and treasurer.

However, despite the setback, the society’s current members are determined to keep going with the hope of bringing the event back for 2017. In order to do so, they desperately need to find a small premises to store barrels, banners, tools and other materials - but definitely no explosives.

A meeting will take place on Monday, April 4 at 8pm in The Royal Oak, Barcombe to discuss finding a new premises and future fundraising events.

Society secretary Charlie Deacon said: “We hope we can continue as a walking society for 2016 and to hold popular fundraising events like the summer dance.

“We are working with a moveable financial base but are lacking year-round manpower to raise the minimum £6,000 needed annually. This figure is likely to rise in coming years too.

“However, this will only happen if we find a premises and get the support we need from our members and village as a whole. We appreciate all the help we receive in bonfire season and we could not go without that, but we need help the rest of the year too.”
