Bognor seafront revamp is still on the agenda

Bognor Regis' seafront strategy is on course despite the global fears over an economic meltdown.

The proposals are for an evolution rather than a revolution of the seafront from Pagham through to Felpham.

It will make use of what is already on offer along the seafront rather than transforming it completely.

Helen Cheeseborough is a director at EDAW, the urban design consultants working to find a vision for the project with Arun District Council.

She has said the proposals will go ahead, but a close eye must be kept on making sure funds are spent wisely.

She said: "In the current economic climate, it is hard to make things happen '“ there are not a lot of things happening at the moment.

"The current climate is not going to help but I think the council is committed and it is about partnership working. It is making sure what money is available is spent effectively."

Ideas being discussed are to improve the food and drink outlets, provide an attraction for young people on the seafront, and to improve access to the seaside for elderly people and the disabled.

Mrs Cheeseborough said she wants to make the seaside an attractive offer all year round, rather than it being busy in just the summer months.

She added: "We have to work with what is on offer '“ there is a really long seafront and lots of sunshine.

"We have got good assets in Bognor '“ there are lots of things to work with.

"There are always people who do not like change, but if you don't change you are going to be left behind."

The seafront strategy will be on display to the public at an exhibition on November 7 and 8.

Details about where and at what times the exhibition will take place will be finalised soon.
