Bid to improve air quality in town centre

A workshop organised by Lewes District Council saw residents, businesses and other local stakeholders engage in discussions on how to tackle air pollution in Lewes.

Participants exchanged ideas around a wide range of issues, including the development of a transport strategy appropriate to the needs of the town, how to solve the problem of peak hour congestion and how to change behaviour by providing more, smarter choices around travel, for example car clubs, greener vehicles, roadside exhaust checks and cycling.

Councillor Julie Carr, Lewes District Council Lead Member for the Environment, said: 'This event has proved to be both very well received and very productive.

'The suggestions and proposals that were generated at the workshop are really valuable in helping us formulate a coherent and effective action plan to tackle air pollution in Lewes.'

Among the number of ideas generated at the meeting, participants agreed that action needs to be taken to tackle congestion in the town and that, together with the already planned change of priority at Commercial Square to improve traffic flow in Fisher Street and Station Street, other traffic management schemes are necessary to improve the situation.

The ideas arising from the workshop will feed into Lewes District Council's action plan about improving the air quality in the centre of Lewes.
