Bexhill arts and crafts shop opens new gallery

The owners of an arts and crafts shop in Bexhill opened a new gallery a few doors down yesterday (Monday, March 14).

Joanna and Raymond Burchartz were joined by mayor Maurice Watson and Rother District Councillor Joy Hughes for the opening of In Perspective Framing & Gallery on St Leonards Road.

The couple also run In Perspective Arts, Crafts and Models shop on the same road.

Joanna said the mayor gave a few words as well as some of the artists whose work is on display.

“We had a really good turnout – we weren’t expecting so many people,” she said.

The shop highlighted the amount of artists in Bexhill keen to showcase their work which inspired the gallery as well as those who wanted quality framing.

The business has been in existence for 33 years and based in Hastings and the previous owner used to do framing.

But the Burchartzs took over in 2014 and moved to St Leonards Road in January last year.

A lack of space meant the framing was stopped but the new space means they can restart the service as well as provide somewhere for artists to house their work.

“It’s really quite exciting as it’s all happened really fast,” she said.

“My husband has done all the work in there, and had to rip out the old shop.

“The transformation from the dark old shop to a light and clean gallery is phenomenal.”

Joanna said they are also trying to reinvigorate the road which is a part of the town centre they feel has been neglected in recent times.

“We’re trying to bring more people to this end of St Leonards Road as we feel that this end gets forgotten about with all the action happening on Devonshire Road and others.

“So we’re trying to make things happen here.”
