A beacon on the town’s seafront was lit by the mayor Marian Ayres – one of 1,000 similar lightings across the country to mark the milestone. More than 500 people attended the celebrations, which featured music from the Silhouette Show trio and the Littlehampton Sea Cadets. Biggs bakery in Wick made a 90th birthday cake which was cut by the mayor, and she also presented scouts and Sea Cadets with souvenir coins to mark the occasion.
