Deputy Station Officer Gary Tidman commented: "Porpoises along with dolphins, whales and sturgeon are categorised as 'Fishes Royal'.

"Every beaching is recorded by HM Coastguard and shared with the Natural History Museum, who use the information to track such events, in order that they may better understand the causes.

"Around 350-800 beaching's occur each year in the UK, most are dead by time they beach however some are alive".

"If you find any 'Fishes Royal' on the beach, keep a safe distance, ascertain your location and dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard".
