Beach hut bonanza

A FEW years ago a beach hut was viewed as a liability '“ vulnerable to vandalism and storm damage. Now, it seems, they're the latest "must have" luxury item and prices are soaring.

The latest local beach hut sale was a "des res" close to the car park and cafe at Ferring. Its owner, who put the hut on the market through local agents Oliver and Saunders, thought it would fetch around 2,500 '“ after all it was in a poor state with much needed repairs to the veranda.

To his surprise it fetched more than double his anticipated figure.

Within an hour or so of the For Sale board appearing on the hut, three would be buyers were calling at the agent's offices with bids. And the offers kept coming in, pushing the price ever higher.

Said agent Mark Oliver: "We put the For Sale board on the beach hut on a lovely sunny day when there were many people walking by and within an hour or two we had three people who seriously wanted to buy."

Demand for the hut didn't surprise president of the Worthing and District Estate Agents Association, Jane Musgrave, who said a hut in tip top condition could command prices up to 11,000 provided it was in a desirable location, preferably close to a car park, cafe and on a good beach.

She added that people living away from the coast are most likely to buy.
