Barnham man jailed for glassing friend

A BARNHAM teenager who attacked a man with a glass bottle in a Chichester alleyway has been jailed for 15 months.

James Sandalls (19) attacked his friend Mark Halliwell in Whyke Lane in June last year when he was 17 years old.

Sandalls, who was training to be a car paint sprayer, was arrested and first appeared at Chichester Crown Court on August 21.

At the time the teenager, of Elm Grove in Barnham, told the court that another friend of his had apparently been aggressive towards him, so Sandalls went to the Eastgate Inn pub in The Hornet to find him.

After a heated incident between the pair the court heard how Mr Halliwell intervened and attempted to break them apart.

Sandalls said Mr Halliwell, his friend for ten years, punched him in the face so he retaliated.

"I saw a bottle on the wheelie bin and used it against him. I threw the bottle in his face from about a foot," said Sandalls. Mary Walford, prosecuting, said to the defendant: "Two witnesses have said after the bottle was struck you were jumping up and down, pleased."

Chichester Crown Court heard that Mr Halliwell received severe injuries to the lower half of his face.

Judge Byers ordered Sandalls to serve 15 months in a young offenders' institution for assault and said: "Violence is the scourge of your generation.

"People must understand that if they resort to violence of this kind then they will be punished as you have."
