Arundel’s riot of colour courtesy of prisoners

A BARREN roundabout at the gateway to Arundel will soon be a riot of colour.

Tens of thousands of bulbs have been planted on the large roundabout on the A27 near Arundel railway station by inmates from Ford Prison.

They include 10,000 daffodils, 12,200 snowdrops and 10,500 crocuses, as well as 60 hawthorn bushes and nine trees.

The prison worked with the Highways Agency and Arundel Town Council on the improvements. Wildflower and grass seeds will also be planted, together with snake’s head lilies and autumn crocuses.

Town councillor Hugh Wilson gave an update on the schemelast week, thanking all those who had been involved, including town councillor Victoria Holland for designing the landscaping plan which, when established, would give a display of “graceful colour”.

He added: “This roundabout is the gateway to Arundel. Let’s hope that in years to come, it will enhance our beautiful town.”

Mr Wilson said Ford Prison, which had donated the trees and hawthorn bushes, would be carrying out maintenance of all the plants on the roundabout after the final phase of autumn planting had been completed.

The Highways Agency funded the initial clearing and spraying of the site.
