Arundel’s acclaimed carpet of flowers is finished

AFTER months of painstaking planning and hours of hard work by a dedicated team of volunteers, Arundel Cathedral’s world-famous Carpet of Flowers was completed on Tuesday (June 5).

This year’s triple theme is centred on the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Queen’s diamond jubilee and the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

The striking display, which opened yesterday (Wednesday, June 4), is made up of thousands of flowers and blooms.

This year’s 93-ft-long carpet features a blazing Olympic torch, the letters “ER” to mark the Queen’s jubilee celebrations and small Titanic inside a round buoy.

Tonight (Thursday) the Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, the Rt Rev Kieran Conry, will lead the procession of the Sacred Host, following mass, out of the cathedral, walking over the carpet.

The procession will then march through the town and into Arundel Castle’s quadrangle.

It will be accompanied by hymns and led by schoolchildren from across the Arundel area.

The Carpet of Flowers is open today (Thursday), from 9.30am with free admission.

The procession of the Blessed Sacrament starts with mass from 5.30pm.
