Arundel youngsters turn back the clock

SCHOOLCHILDREN experienced the day-to-day realities of total war.

Arundel Church of England Primary School held a Second World War day on Thursday. Dressed in 1940s clothes, they took part in an evacuation, bought food using ration coupons, and experienced drill sessions and air raid procedures.

Head teacher Andrew Simpson said: “We feel it is very important that we learn about the significant moments of the past so we can, hopefully, learn from them, and not make the same mistakes again.”

He added that the day was part of a wider project on the conflict.

“As part of their curriculum programme the children were given the opportunity to visit the Imperial War Museum, hear the experiences of people who lived through the Second World War, and consider how the events affected children during this difficult period from different social groups and from different countries.”

Such a hands-on approach to the day was intended to give the year- three pupils more of an understanding of the period, said Mr Simpson.
