Whitehawk children receive activity pack from after school club which usually offers them a ‘sanctuary’

Children in Whitehawk received a lovely surprise earlier this week when volunteers from their after school scheme delivered activity packs and Easter eggs.

The lockdown is a difficult time for all of us, but for many of these children it means staying in homes where often things are very difficult and complex, sometimes even troubling.

Usually the Whitehawk After School Project (WASP) would be a sanctuary for them. They would be spending between one and five afternoons a week there where they would be able to forget their worries and have lots of fun in a safe space.

In response to the lockdown, the WASP team met together earlier this week to surprise the children with a little package to keep them busy and raise their spirits during this strange time.

Packs including a Mars Easter Egg, a workbook of activities. They also included balloons, pegs, string, glue and scissors for their arts and crafts.

Run by Impact Initiatives, WASP’s team includes expert and qualified play-workers who would usually be working with the children to help build their confidence and encourage achievements.

One parent said, “D says thank you so much for her chocolate and activity pack. That is such a kind unexpected gesture. It’s just made D’s morning. Thank you so much. We will get on with some activities this afternoon. Thank you.”

One of the staff said, “Fantastic job from everyone concerned and it was a pleasure taking part in something which gave so much joy to the kids and us in these strange times when you feel so helpless. Well done WASP.”

Contributions to the packages were also made from The Brighton and Hove Food Partnership.
