Sixth formers teamed up with the National Citizen Service to raise awareness of issues affecting the homeless at last year's sleepout and nine students took part, raising more than £400 for the West Sussex charity.

This year, the sleepout committee is expecting around five times as many students to take part in Angmering School Sleepout 2023 on Friday, November 24, and a target of £1,500 has been set.

Leon Dobson, charity lead and sleepout committee manager, said: "This year, we have more than 40 students projected to sleepout with us, as well as several teachers, the head of sixth form, the headteacher and representatives from Turning Tides.

"During the evening, we will be having a barbecue on site, run by the committee with food donated by local supermarkets, before hopefully receiving a presentation from an ex-homeless person to learn more about what life was like for them.

"This will educate us on how our time and money is supporting the community, which I think is invaluable. We will also use some donated cardboard to create forts like last year, and set up a few campfires for warmth. If it rains or students are too uncomfortable, there is shelter and a heated room available for them.

"Obviously, this scenario is unlike what actual homeless people experience on a daily basis but it is enough to simulate it for students as we are used to having the luxuries of electricity, shelter and a warm bed. I truly believe that this will be an even more impactful event than last year, as well as an incredible opportunity for everyone involved."

The sixth form students are supported by Concordia, which delivers NCS in the area. Visit www.justgiving.com/page/angmeringsixthform-sleepout-2023 for more information and to make a donation.

Leon said: "Last November proved to be a huge success in raising money for Turning Tides to provide shelter and support for homeless people in and around the Littlehampton community. We are aiming to go above again this year!

"Small acts of kindness can make a huge impact on our community, and we at Angmering sixth form strongly believe every day is an opportunity to be better than yesterday. Let’s make our community a better place together, one small step at a time!"
