Alfie Gritt hit a double as Worthing United Football Club returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Broadbridge Heath on Saturday.
After a six-game winless run, Mavericks went ahead after just six minutes when Ben Hall got in down the left and pulled the ball back from the byline for Craig Nagle to score his first senior goal.
Gritt then shot straight at the visiting keeper from six yards before he made it 2-0 on 32 minutes. Paul Elliott fed the ball to Gritt, who beat his man and fired into the top corner.
Elliott volleyed over, before Heath clipped the bar with a free kick just before half-time.
Broadbridge Heath got a goal back eight minutes into the second half when United failed to clear a throw and full-back Stuart Chester volleyed home.
The visitors then enjoyed a spell of pressure and saw a free kick hit the outside of a post, before Mavericks went 3-1 ahead on 72 minutes.
Pat Rose put a corner into the penalty area and Gritt miscontrolled the ball, before turning and volleying into the top corner for his 14th goal of the season.
United then felt they could have had a penalty for handball, before Heath struck the woodwork again in the final minute.
United boss Nigel Geary said: “We had a few players back and played really well. They are a tough team to play against and had beaten good teams in Horsham and Newhaven recently.
“We probably should have scored one or two more before half-time and we said at half-time that the next goal was going to be crucial.
“They got it and then put us under pressure for ten minutes or so but we got through it and then got the third.
“We’ve had a tough run of fixtures but will look to pick up some points in our last few games now. We go to Hailsham on Saturday and hopefully we’ll have everyone available.”
UNITED: Trigwell; Rahaman, Marsh, Hasan, Hall; Joseph, Gilmour, Nagle, Rose, P.Elliott; Gritt. Subs: Blundell (Joseph 59), Tugnutt (Gritt 75), Foster (Rose 80), J.Elliott, Evans.
